Utilise trauma informed training practices

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish and develop a professional mentoring relationship with an individual in a workplace.

It applies to trainers and workplace supervisors or other work colleagues who work under limited supervision and who have responsibility for training one or more individuals in the workplace or in a vocational education and training setting. This may include, but is not limited to, those who train an apprentice or trainee employed by, or undertaking a work placement within, an organisation or training in a post-secondary environment.

1. Develop a trauma informed training approach

1.1 Identify scope and boundaries of the trauma informed approach accounting for organisational procedures

1.2 Document trauma informed training approach

1.3 Establish processes to identify trauma

1.4 Establish and maintain confidentiality of relationships in accordance with legislation, policy and procedures

2. Apply trauma informed practices in a training environment

2.1 Develop positive relationships with those affected by trauma

2.2 Create a positive physical space

2.3 Use simple priming techniques to foster positive emotions such as contentment, pride, awe, and wonder

2.4 Provide opportunities to allow trauma affected learners to identify, recognise, practice, and use character strengths

2.5 Provide opportunities to allow trauma affected learners to build resilience

2.6 Respond appropriately to disclosures of trauma

2.7 Respond appropriately to expressions of trauma

3. Monitor trauma informed training approach

3.1 Participate in discussions about trauma and related social justice issues

3.2 Recognise and discuss changes in the trauma informed relationships with appropriate stakeholders

3.3 Negotiate and manage closure of the trauma informed arrangement as required

4. Evaluate effectiveness of trauma informed approach

4.1 Establish and discuss benefits gained from the trauma informed approach

4.2 Reflect upon own practice and work environment to embed trauma informed care and practice in training delivery

4.3 Identify barriers to implementing trauma informed care and practice and refer to appropriate/ senior personnel

4.4 Reflect on and articulate the personal benefits gained from utilising a trauma informed approach in training

4.5 Identify and report the outcomes of the trauma informed arrangement and the benefits to the organisation according to organisational policy and procedures to improve the mentoring system or program

Assessment requirements

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, including:

○ preparing a trauma informed plan that sets out clear objectives for a trauma informed training approach

○ facilitating at least three sessions utilising trauma informed approaches in training
