Have a common: defense, foreign policy, citizenship; & a stronger Parliament

Establish a common currency-(1996-1999) (except UK)

Have a common social policy (except UK)

EU to act, if the objectives are better met at EU’s level than at member states (subsidiarity principle)

EU-Parliament granted greater powers so that to co-decide in all transport policy issues of sea (& air)!

Free movement of persons & immigrants, beyond the Schengen agreement (except in UK, Ireland & Denmark)

Extend EU’s commercial policy rules to service sectors & intellectual property, including maritime relations with 3rd countries

Intergovernmental conference-Amsterdam (June 1997)

A social policy providing also employment incentives
