Aim

To shed light on how the sense of coherence of students changed after a practicum in basic nursing and which stress factors of the practicum are associated with such changes.

To shed light on the structure of stress factors in nursing students during a practicum in basic nursing; elucidate the relationship between stress factors and stress-coping behaviors during a clinical practicum by taking into account the SOC of students; and examine how practicums in basic nursing can be improved.

To elucidate the structure of stress factors during a practicum in basic nursing, and validate the relationship between stress factors and stress-coping behaviors in nursing students.

To shed light on the impact of the SOC prior to a practicum in basic nursing on the stress and stress-coping behaviors of year-two students at University A; and examine the system of instructions for the basic nursing practicum.

To shed light on the relationship between the SOC of nursing students and their awareness of self and others.

Participant, study period

Ÿ A total of 158 students from the Department of Nursing of University A, comprising 82 students enrolled in 2011 and 76 in 2012.

Ÿ A total of 158 students from the Department of Nursing of University A, comprising 82 students enrolled in u2011 and 76 in 2012.

Ÿ A total of 158 first-year students from a nursing department, comprising of 79 students enrolled in the course in 2012 and 79 in 2013.

Ÿ A total of 158 students from the Department of Nursing of University A, comprising 82 students enrolled in 2011 and 76 in 2012.

Ÿ A total of 73 first-year students at Nursing University A (those who were about to start Basic Nursing Practicum I).

Ÿ The study was conducted in February 2010.

The structure of stress factors was extracted for the following:

Ÿ Progress in the nursing course

Ÿ Relationship with teachers and instructors

Ÿ Relationship with patients, families, and health professionals

Ÿ Lack of knowledge and skills

Ÿ Regular practicum plans

Ÿ Briefings

Ÿ Relationship between students

The structure of stress factors was extracted for the following:

Ÿ Relationship with teachers and instructors

Ÿ Lack of knowledge and skills

Ÿ Reflection on care for patients

Ÿ Relationship with patients, families, and health care staff

Ÿ Briefings

Ÿ Relationship between students

Ÿ Regular practicum plans

Through a review of previous studies, 29 items were extracted.
